If you've ever wanted to know where all pesky e-mails encouraging you to refinance your mortgage or telling you where to buy cheap pharmaceuticals online, the New Yorker has published an incredibly thorough article on the history and problem of unsolicited e-mail--Spam. The article chronicles the fascinating battle that has existed since the late 70's, and the unique problem that exists today with the proliferation of computers and the internet, and the anonymity that these "Spam-Kings" thrive off of.
